In 1980 there were only three listings, by 1995 there were less than 25 companies listed on a stock exchange. In the following years the number has more than doubled reaching 50 listed private equity companies in 2000 (Link: LPE Chart). With the beginning of the year 2004 a new wave of initial public offerings emerged with 38 new listings in the years 2006 and 2007, making listed private equity a serious investment niche for investors seeking exposure to private equity.

The UK is the dominant listed private equity market making half of the worldwide market. The other half is devided by Europe ex UK and North America. The Asia Pacific Region makes about 6%. (Link: LPE Geographic Allocation)
